What to do when the scheduled time is not enough?
Reading · 5 min

Even with a careful estimate, a visit may take longer than expected. The home may have been more heavily used, an extra request may have been added, or an area may show unusual soiling. In this situation, rushing everything usually leads to a disappointing result.
Identify the cause
The first step is to understand why the planned duration is no longer adequate. Common causes include: heavier state than usual, dishes or belongings left in quantity, linen not prepared, many extra beds, unannounced exceptional task, delayed access, unavailable equipment, marks needing several treatments, last-minute added request.
This information must be communicated factually.
Respect agreed priorities
When time is limited, priority areas must be handled first. In a private residence this often means bathrooms, kitchen, floors, used bedrooms, the entrance or an arrival preparation.
Secondary tasks can be postponed, but they must not silently disappear.
Do not lower hygiene
Saving time must never mean using the same equipment everywhere, ignoring necessary contact times or mixing sanitary and food areas.
The working method must remain professional, even when some tasks must be deferred.
Inform the owner or partner
When possible, the professional can request a decision: 'The kitchen needs about an extra hour. Would you like to extend the visit or postpone the windows to the next one?'
This phrasing lets the client choose knowingly. When the owner is unreachable, the professional applies the priorities already set.
Document postponed tasks
The report should state what was completed, what remains, why, the estimated extra time and the proposal for the next visit.
This transparency protects the relationship.
Adjust future visits
When overruns become regular, the issue is no longer exceptional. Duration or frequency probably no longer matches the home's needs.
Several solutions can be considered: increase duration, tighten visits, alternate tasks, plan a reset, remove some missions or better organise linen and supplies.
A professional service is not about pretending anything is possible in any timeframe. It is about using time responsibly, stating limits and preserving quality on validated priorities.
Each home has its specifics. A first exchange helps understand your needs before any intervention.
